Basic Function

Under moderate supervision, performs journey-level work utilizing computer scheduling software to build and maintain bus and rail schedules, Operator work run assignments, and related documents; performs ride check, stop check, ride line, and division monitoring; and performs schedule monitoring to improve service for Operators and passengers.

Example Of Duties

  • Prepares, updates, and maintains bus and rail transit operating schedules according to guidelines and other available schedule data to meet passenger demands
  • Revises existing schedules based on review and analysis of passenger load, vehicle running times and other factors
  • Develops Operator′s work runs in accordance with Metro policy and collective bargaining agreements (CBAs)
  • Utilizes computer programs via terminals to assist in the development of schedules, work runs, and related statistics
  • Develops and maintains statistical data related to schedules, work runs, personnel, requirements, and service costs
  • Balances and verifies schedules, work runs, and workforce counts for accuracy and compliance with applicable provisions and guidelines
  • Analyzes operations personnel and patron complaints, recommends changes, and writes responses
  • Prepares, orders, and proofreads schedule materials prior to publication
  • Participates in test trips/ride lines of new or revised transit routes
  • Visits various operating divisions to exchange information with operating personnel regarding service requirements
  • Provides documentation to Operators and the public and responds to division requests
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Requirements For Employment

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

  • None Required; Associate′s Degree in a related field preferred


Experience

  • One year of relevant experience developing transit schedules and Operator work run assignments; training or experience using microcomputer software preferred


Certification/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Frequent travel to other Metro locations

Knowledge:

  • Theories, principles, procedures, and techniques of transit schedule making
  • Large-scale bus transit operations and routes
  • Basic statistical methods
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies
  • Relevant labor contract provisions
  • Vehicle operations and safety
  • HASTUS computer system for building schedules
  • Applicable business software applications


Skilled in:

  • Developing schedules and Operator assignments according to Metro standards
  • Creating schedules using schedule making software
  • Compiling and statistically analyzing quantifiable data
  • Analyzing situations and identifying problems
  • Performing arithmetic and basic statistical calculations rapidly and accurately
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Reading and understanding rules, policies, maps, schedules, and labor-management agreements
  • Preparing reports and correspondence
  • Safely operating vehicles
  • Operating a calculator and computer terminal

Abilities:

  • Monitor bus and rail service schedules
  • Set priorities and meet deadlines and tight time constraints
  • Develop schedule building methods and procedures
  • Understand and interpret rules, policies, and procedures
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
