Basic Function

Assists in developing construction documents for architects and engineers for capital projects; leads drafting personnel in the preparation, updating, and revision of complex drawings and plans utilizing computer-aided design (CAD).

Example Of Duties

  • Prepares, revises, and updates complex construction documents and packages, including engineering and architectural drawings, plans, and blueprints using manual and CAD methodologies
  • Assists engineers and architects in explaining their design intent
  • Reviews and inspects drawings for compliance with Metro requirements and approved specifications; revises engineering and architectural drawings to incorporate design changes
  • Performs complex engineering-related mathematical calculations
  • Prepares material costs and quantity estimates on projects based on engineering drawings
  • Coordinates with supervisor and engineers regarding work phase schedules and progress of each project
  • Conducts and recommends specialized training of personnel in CAD and related software programs
  • Monitors drafting requests utilizing applicable database software
  • Establishes standards and procedures for converting, sorting, and distributing drawings to microfilm (aperture cards); indexes technical manuals and reference materials in Technical Library
  • Recommends yearly capital equipment acquisitions; evaluates new drafting hardware and software
  • Ensures all CAD equipment is maintained and serviced
  • Travels to various Metro facilities/installations to make site investigations and document and prepare engineering drawings for the installation and modification of equipment; takes photographs and field measurements
  • Prepares charts and graphs for presentations
  • Oversees, trains, and motivates assigned staff
  • Contributes to ensuring that the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Requirements For Employment

  • College-level courses in architectural or engineering design and computer-aided design/drafting systems
  • 3 years experience performing engineering drafting work
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications (PQs) are used to identify relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as determined by business necessity. These criteria are considered preferred qualifications and are not intended to serve as minimum requirements for the position. PQs will help support selection decisions throughout the recruitment. In addition, applicants who possess these PQs will not automatically be selected.

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field

Knowledge:

(Defined as a learned body of information that is required for and applied in the performance of job tasks)

  • Theories, principles, and practices of architecture and engineering drafting
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, codes, ordinances, and regulations governing engineering and architectural design and construction
  • Computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) software applications, including AutoCAD, Revit, and MicroStation
  • Engineering, architectural, and construction terminology and concepts
  • Basic engineering and/or architectural mathematics
  • Principles of supervision
  • Applicable business software applications


Skill in (defined as the proficient manual, verbal, or mental utilization of data, people, or things)

  • Utilizing CADD software applications
  • Preparing complex drawings, plans, and blueprints
  • Mapping programs
  • Managing projects from inception to completion
  • Analyzing situations and identifying problems
  • Exercising sound judgement and creativity in making decisions
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing
  • Interacting professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives

  • Perform complex drafting and/or design work
  • Interpret and understand applicable contractual specifications and plans
  • Meet tight time constraints and deadlines
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
  • Oversee, train, and motivate assigned staff
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Abilities:

A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Additional experience, as outlined below, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis. A typical combination includes:

Education

  • Associate's Degree in architectural or engineering design and computer-aided design/drafting systems or a related field


Experience

  • Three years of relevant experience performing engineering drafting work


Certifications/Licenses/Special Requirements

  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
