Basic Function

To provide technical support for civil engineering/construction projects.

Example Of Duties

  • Prepares plans, sketches, specifications, and estimates for design, construction, and modification of Metro facilities
  • Reviews design and construction submittals, responds to requests for information (RFIs), and assists in the evaluation of requests for change
  • Reviews consultants' and contractors' plans, sketches, certifications, and related documents for compliance with Metro standards and requirements
  • Compiles and analyzes data for engineering projects; recommends materials and equipment
  • Coordinates and interacts with the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, utility agencies, and other third parties as required to complete tasks
  • Prepares project reports, correspondences, and meeting minutes
  • Assists with budget and schedule reviews
  • Prepares plans, specifications, and estimates
  • Assists in preparing feasibility studies/engineering reports and in managing smaller projects or tasks
  • Updates databases and maintains engineering and construction records
  • Represents Metro with construction/engineering/supplier community
  • May respond to site emergencies
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Requirements For Employment

  • Bachelor's degree - Civil or Construction Engineering, or other related field
  • 2 years' experience performing engineering work in the civil or construction engineering discipline
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications (PQs) are used to identify relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as determined by business necessity. These criteria are considered preferred qualifications and are not intended to serve as minimum requirements for the position. PQs will help support selection decisions throughout the recruitment. In addition, applicants who possess these PQs will not automatically be selected.

The following are the preferred qualifications:

  • Experience designing roads, curbs, sidewalks, and/or drainage
  • Experience providing engineering support during construction, including review of submittals, response to requests for information (RFIs), and/or assistance in evaluating requests for change
  • Experience preparing plans and specifications for construction and/or maintenance engineering projects
  • Experience designing according to the standards and approval processes of the City of Los Angeles, County of Los Angeles, and/or local utility agencies
  • Experience utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification or Professional Engineer certification

Knowledge:

  • Theories, principles, and practices of civil engineering
  • Applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Engineering hardware and software, including Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)
  • Street and drainage designs
  • Local building and zoning codes

Abilities:

  • Perform civil engineering work
  • Read, interpret, and apply plans and specifications
  • Perform engineering calculations
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and correspondence
  • Analyze situations, identify problems, and recommend solutions
  • Compile and analyze complex data
  • Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, contracts, budgets, and labor/management agreements
  • Interact professionally with various levels of Metro employees and outside representatives
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English
